Life in Lockville: Town Life
Lockville Canal Park
5895 Pickerington Rd
Carroll, OH 43112
Lockville was already a “thriving village” with “two large flouring Mills, one Distillery and one saw Mill, all in operation.” The gristmill located at Lock 11 had twice the capacity of Rock Mill; it had four grinding stones and two waterwheels with a consistent flow of water.
“The Wants of Lockville”, an 1854 ad in Lancaster Gazette (excerpt pictured), stated, “Firstly, we want a good Blacksmith and wagon maker.” The ad enticed shoemakers, carpenters, and proprietors of dry goods and grocery stores by touting the “rich lands” and “the convenience of the Ohio Canal.” If you were living at that time, would you have answered the call for the town life?
Come to learn more about the people of Lockville!
